Deaf / Unclaimed Accounts
RBI vide its circular dated 31.03.2008 has mandated the transfer of the credit balance of the Inoperative/ Unclaimed Accounts to the Depositor Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF). An account is treated as Unclaimed/ Inoperative if no transactions have been made in the account for a period of ten years or more. The fund balance is transferred to the RBI DEAF account as per the directives. The interest continues to accrue on the account balance at the savings deposit rate until the date of transfer. Customers can reclaim their unclaimed deposits from the bank even after the transfer to DEAF.
As per RBI Regulation, Banks are mandated to display the list of Unclaimed Deposits for more than 10 years on their website to help customers find their long-forgotten accounts. Customers should check the list and contact the bank to reclaim their deposits, mentioning the account number and the branch name where the account was held.
